Northern Ireland continues to produce exciting amateur MMA talent, and Johnny Thompson is another fighter making his mark on the local scene.
From Burnside, just outside Ballyclare, Johnny has been involved in mixed martial arts from an early age. After first taking up MMA at around 12 years old, years of training eventually led him into amateur competition in 2022.
Today, Johnny represents Fight Academy Ireland (FAI) and competes at bantamweight, building an amateur record of 4 wins and 4 losses while testing himself against increasingly experienced opposition.
Most recently, that journey took him into his biggest fight yet — competing for the Cage Conflict Bantamweight Championship.
Johnny’s introduction to MMA came much earlier than it does for many amateur fighters.
At around 12 years old, he first began training in mixed martial arts.
Starting young gave Johnny years to experience the different disciplines that make MMA such a demanding sport. Striking is only one part of the equation, with wrestling, submissions, takedown defence and positional control all becoming essential as fighters progress.
That early introduction eventually developed into something more serious.
In 2022, Johnny began his amateur MMA career and started putting those years of training to the test inside the cage.
Since making his amateur debut, Johnny has accumulated a 4-4 record, competing regularly on the Northern Irish MMA circuit.
His record also shows the variety within his game.
Johnny has recorded victories both through submissions and decisions, demonstrating that he is capable of finding different routes to victory rather than relying on one area alone.
Among those victories was a first-round rear-naked choke against Johnny Burnham at Cage Conflict 10, followed by another rear-naked choke victory over Jonny Duggan at Cage Conflict 14, this time in the second round.
He has also picked up decision victories during his amateur career.
Every appearance has added valuable cage experience and helped move Johnny towards bigger opportunities.
Johnny currently trains out of Fight Academy Ireland (FAI).
Being surrounded by an active fight team is an important part of developing as an amateur competitor. MMA requires constant work across multiple disciplines, and every opponent can present an entirely different challenge.
Fight camps aren’t simply about getting fitter before stepping into the cage. They involve preparing technically and tactically for an opponent while continuing to improve the fighter’s overall skillset.
For Johnny, that process has seen him progress from making his amateur debut in 2022 to competing for championship gold.
Johnny’s most recent appearance represented an important milestone in his amateur career.
At Cage Conflict 17, he faced Eoghan Gorrell for the Cage Conflict Bantamweight Championship.
The fight went the full three rounds and ultimately came down to the judges’ scorecards.
Gorrell was awarded the victory by split decision, meaning the judges themselves were divided over the result.
For Johnny, it meant leaving without the belt, but reaching a championship fight demonstrated how far his amateur journey had already progressed.
A close title fight can also provide valuable experience. Championship opportunities bring additional pressure and expectations, and Johnny now knows exactly what it feels like to prepare for and compete with a belt on the line.
Competing at bantamweight, Johnny operates in a division where speed, conditioning and technical ability can all play significant roles.
His existing record demonstrates experience both going the distance and finishing opponents on the ground.
Two of his four recorded amateur victories have come by submission, while the other two have come via decision.
That mixture is valuable for a developing MMA fighter. Knowing you can find a submission when an opportunity presents itself while also being prepared to compete across the full duration of a fight creates different options inside the cage.
Johnny’s journey is another example of the talent emerging from towns and communities throughout Northern Ireland.
From starting MMA at around 12 years old in Burnside outside Ballyclare, to beginning his amateur career in 2022 and eventually challenging for a Cage Conflict championship, he has already accumulated significant competitive experience.
At 4-4, there is still plenty of room for the next chapters of that journey.
At amateur level, every fight is an opportunity to develop. Wins can demonstrate what is working, while defeats can highlight the areas that need attention before the next camp begins.
Johnny has already shown a willingness to continue stepping into the cage and testing himself.
After coming within a split decision of capturing the Cage Conflict Bantamweight Championship, attention now turns towards what comes next.
The title fight may not have produced the result Johnny wanted, but it added another three competitive rounds and championship-fight experience to his amateur career.
Now back in the gym at Fight Academy Ireland, the focus will be on continuing to improve, building on the experience gained from eight amateur fights and working towards the next opportunity.
From a 12-year-old beginning his MMA journey to a bantamweight competing for championship gold, Johnny Thompson has already come a long way.
And at this stage of his amateur career, there could still be plenty more to come.
